BEA offered an education series, where many experts participated in panels about a wide range of topics relating to publishing. One of the most interesting panels was called “The Reader Revolution: Changing the Game for Readers, Writers, and Everyone in Between.”
The panel was moderated by David Wilk, and included Dennis Loy Johnson, the co-founder/Publisher of Mellville House and founder of Moby Lives, Audrey Niffenegger, the author of The Time Traveler’s Wife and Her Fearful Symmetry, Joseph Regal, CEO of Zola Books, Mark Suchomel, president of IPG, and Christine Onorati, owner of WORD.
The topic of the panel was how readers are changing the publishing industry. Many readers are turning to digital devices to get their fix, and they get recommendations via social media. More and more of the industry is going online, so the panelists discussed recent developments and how it all affects the ecosystem of writers, publishers, distributors, independent booksellers, reviewers, and readers.
Basically, the panelists said that “publishing is a system, and we all need each other.”
Joseph Regal said, “everyone is always dealing with time and money.” With more and more content available, more people are using curators to find good content, he said.
The Internet has made it possible for readers to feel directly connected to writers, publishers, and others in the industry. (Some sites such as Byliner are helping them connect). Zola Books also wants to help make that connection. Read more about the website in my post, Zola Books: A Review.
