As the gang head deeper into the Zombie RiZing, the salvation of the shopping centre awaits - food, supplies, weapons - everything they could need for their future survival. The only problem is, when we say salvation, we could actually mean another level of monster-plagued, bad-guy-laden, lair of despair.
Beath and her magic-wielding friends are about to cross paths with fellow survivor Karl Dreeks, and if they've learned one thing in the RiZing, it's that you can trust the fellow survivors about as much as you can the monsters.
Oh, speaking of which, did we mention the new breed of monsters? We didn't? That seems like an oversight, as these new bad boys can fly!
So, when we say salvation, it could just be code for things are about to get a whole lot worse!
I’m so happy that Matt Pike decided to write this series. In the fourth book of the series, Zombie RiZing: Creeping Beath, the story picks up right where it left off.
Beath and the gang are driving through the city, trying to steer clear of grunts (zombies), giants, and other creatures as they make their way to the shopping mall for supplies.
The poor kids, plus Ms. Simmons, don’t seem to get a break throughout the whole book. When they manage to get to Black Oaks Shopping Centre, they discover all new horrors, starting with flyers (also known as daves). Flyers are like a mix of people and bats, with short legs, claws, human-like faces, fangs, dark eyes, and large wings. They are agile in the air, which makes them very dangerous.
Like a good guide, Creeping Beath warns readers not to watch flyers for too long, because you don’t want to be spotted. The book also fills us in on the pros and cons of one-liners and shopping sprees.
I do hope at some point we learn the origin story of all the giants and flyers and grunts with blue eyes. Creeping Beath hints at it when the gang finally gets into the mall and sees a terrifying ritual. I don’t want to give out any spoilers, so I’ll leave it at that. Also, we’re introduced to some interesting new characters.
As with the rest of the books in this series, Creeping Beath is a page turner. And as usual, Matt Pike deftly weaves in humor and beautiful prose with an action-packed story.
Here’s an example, taken from the scene where Beath and her friends find an unusual sight in the zombie apocalypse world: lifeless bodies:
I’m sure we’ve got a lot more to learn about souls, their place in the riZing and the afterlife later but, for right now, it’s only important to know one thing—bodies aren’t normal.
Why? Because zombies don’t kill zombies. A body means someone—a live someone—has returned the body of a person to the husk of a soul it once was and sent the soul to where it now belongs.
As the series progresses, each character gets stronger, braver, and smarter about how to handle each new crisis. It’s pretty fun to see what they come up with when battling the grunts and other new creatures they encounter.
It’s hard to imagine how Beath and her friends will manage to survive and/or escape all the grunts and other creatures in their new world, but I’m excited to see what happens in the next book. And I’m kind of hoping that the next book will give us a peek into Ms. Simmons’ life before the apocalypse.
Book number 5, Beath Becomes Her, is scheduled for release on August 28. If you haven’t yet read the first four books, then you should definitely give them a try. They’re fun and quick to read. And they’ll have you biting your nails wondering what happens next.
